The sign read “Where are you going, Heaven or Hell?”,
Outside a town named In-Between.
I swung my past onto my back,
And shuffled off toward unseen.
Took a short drive down a deserted path,
Where trees barricade any hope of rescue.
The dark did descend, settled into the night,
And my last weary thought was you.
Awoken by a voice, it was not like the last,
Just a whisper in my ear.
Gentle tones, forgotten shadows of the past,
Remind me that you are not here.
Another bitter end just proved your fear,
And poisoned hope of binding me with you.
So here I am, watching you take your place,
As one of the lonely few.
Knocked us down, but I picked you up
Got there early but ran outta luck
All for your life, year after year.
The dust burns my face like so many lies
It strips away, a fool's disguise
The end of our comfort is near.
The blooming dawn, sunlight through the trees,
Promises the coming day.
My exhausted mind - clears - with the breeze,
That helps me to find my way.
With that sign in my mirror as I move on
To put another town, between me and you.
Knowing this time, what was left behind,
Was one of the lonely few.
